How to prepare a Spotify playlist pitch before release

Plan your release, describe your song and prepare a pitch before it goes live.

You can submit one unreleased song at a time to Spotify’s editors through Spotify for Artists. Give the release enough time to arrive in your account, choose the song you want to represent it, and describe the music clearly. A pitch is a request for consideration, not a guarantee of an editorial playlist placement.

Before you pitch

  1. Deliver the finished release through your distributor and choose a future release date.
  2. Check that the upcoming release appears in Spotify for Artists and that you have the right access.
  3. Pick the song you want to pitch and prepare a short, accurate description.
  4. Submit the pitch before release day. Spotify recommends delivering at least seven days before release.
  5. After release, check the song’s playlist information in Spotify for Artists.

According to Spotify’s pitching guidance, only admins and editors can pitch, and a song cannot be pitched after it goes live. Compilations and songs where you are only a featured artist are not eligible for song pitching. Check Spotify’s current rules before submitting.

Give your distributor time

Seven days is not a target for pressing upload at the last possible moment. Your distributor needs time to deliver the release before it appears in Spotify for Artists. Leave additional time for that delivery and for correcting any artwork or credit problems.

Spotify says pitching an eligible unreleased song at least seven days before release adds it to followers’ Release Radar. Release Radar has additional conditions, so that does not mean every follower will hear every song or that an editorial playlist will select it.

Describe what a listener will hear

Use the form to give clear details that help an editor understand the recording: its sound, mood, instruments, language and the story behind it. Be specific and truthful. A short description such as “a slow piano-led song with a close vocal and a rising final chorus” gives a clearer picture than a list of superlatives.

Finish the recording before delivery. If the mix is ready and you want a final pass, master your track, then listen to the complete result and choose your final file. The audio file checklist can help you prepare the upload.

After the song is live

Check the release page, artist profile and credits. If a detail is wrong, contact your distributor about a correction. In Spotify for Artists, review the song’s playlist information to see where it has appeared. Keep sharing the release with people who may enjoy it; an editorial pitch is only one part of reaching listeners.
