The official Spotify numbers

Spotify's loudness-normalization page currently states:

  • Normalization happens during playback.
  • The uploaded audio track is measured but not changed before playback.

  • One high-quality stereo master per track is enough.

The same page says behavior can vary on the web player and third-party devices. Listeners can also choose normalization modes. That is why one number cannot replace mastering judgment.

What Spotify normalization actually does

Spotify measures loudness using the ITU 1770 standard, then applies positive or negative gain during supported playback.

If a master is louder than the reference, Spotify turns it down. That gain change does not undo compression, clipping, saturation, or limiting already printed into the file.

If a master is quieter, Spotify may turn it up while respecting available headroom. It does not blindly raise a quiet track into clipping.

There is no mystical "loudness penalty." There is playback gain. A very loud master may still sound different after it is turned down because its dynamics were changed before delivery.

Should every Spotify master be -14 LUFS?

Spotify recommends -14 integrated LUFS for optimized playback. That makes it a sensible starting point, especially when transparency and headroom matter.

Ask these questions before moving a limiter:

  • Does the chorus still lift?
  • Do drums retain impact?
  • Does the vocal become harsh when level increases?
  • Is low-end movement turning into a constant block?
  • Does the louder version still win after both versions are loudness-matched?

If not, the extra density is costing more than it gives.

Why true peak matters

A digital sample meter shows stored sample values. The reconstructed waveform between those samples can reach a higher level. Lossy encoding and sample-rate conversion can create additional overs.

ITU-R BS.1770-5 specifies the current true-peak measurement approach. Spotify uses true-peak guidance to reduce the chance of extra distortion during transcoding.

Measure the final export. A limiter ceiling is not proof that the rendered file stayed below it under true-peak measurement.

A practical mastering-for-Spotify workflow

1. Finish the mix

The vocal, bass, drums, and arrangement should already work. Do not ask mastering to solve a buried lead or wrong lyric inside one stereo file.

2. Export lossless

Use the highest-quality WAV or FLAC available. Do not convert an MP3 into WAV and call it lossless.

Spotify's current audio-format guidance asks distributors to deliver FLAC or WAV and says it calculates track and release loudness using ITU 1770. The exact distributor form may differ, so follow the distributor's current specification.

3. Diagnose at moderate volume

List the two or three largest issues. Common examples are excess low-mid energy, hard vocal sibilance, weak transients, and unstable section levels.

4. Shape tone gently

Correct broad balance before tiny notches. Avoid boosting high-frequency "air" when the source already contains fizz or brittle vocal texture.

5. Control dynamics

Use compression for cohesion, not for meter movement. Preserve the contrast that makes the chorus feel larger.

6. Set final level

Begin around Spotify's guidance, then choose the level the song supports. If you go louder than -14 LUFS, leave the additional true-peak margin Spotify recommends.

7. Compare at matched loudness

Turn the louder version down until it feels equal to the quieter version. Compare punch, tone, fatigue, and clarity.

8. Check mono and codecs

Fold the master to mono and listen for disappearing vocals, bass, or effects. If possible, audition a compressed preview to expose bright artifacts before delivery.

9. Export and listen again

Play the actual delivery file from first sample to last. Check fades, silence, clicks, clipping, and metadata outside the audio file.
