Mastering changes a finished stereo mix. Mixing changes the balance inside it.
You need mixing when:

Dynamic EQ or de-essing can reduce intermittent harshness more safely than a large static shelf. If the entire source is distorted, return to the generation.
Muddy low mids
Low-mid buildup can make the vocal, bass, piano, guitars, and pads occupy the same cloudy area. Use broad, small corrections and level balance before narrow cuts.
Soft transients
Heavy generation processing may smear drum attacks. Modest transient shaping or slower compression attack can help. Extreme enhancement can create clicks and expose codec texture.
Synthetic vocals
Control sibilance and resonances gently. A separated vocal may allow more precise work, but reject the split if it sounds phasey or watery.
Unstable stereo

- modest compression or transient shaping
- stereo adjustment with mono checks
- final gain and true-peak limiting

9. Quality-check outside the session
Play the final exported file on:
- earbuds for vocal edge and fatigue
- a phone speaker for hook and midrange clarity
- a car or familiar full-range system for low end
- mono for phase cancellation
- low volume for focal balance
Listen to the beginning, ending, quietest section, and loudest section. Do not approve a master from the chorus alone.
10. Prepare the release, not only the audio
A finished master still needs:
