How to add and sync lyrics on Spotify

Prepare your words, verify your artist profile and sync your lyrics to the recording.

Spotify says artists can add, edit and sync lyrics through Musixmatch after their artist profile is verified. Its free plan supports these tasks. Allow time for verification and for changes to appear, and check the finished lyrics against the recording.

Prepare the words

Listen to the released recording while reading your lyric sheet. Include repeated lines in full instead of writing “repeat twice,” and transcribe the words that are actually sung. Check spelling, punctuation and the order of sections. If more than one person contributed words, confirm you have the necessary permissions before publishing them.

If you are still writing, the lyrics workspace can help you develop a draft. Revise it for your own song and compare the final words with the recording; a draft does not replace a transcript of the released performance.

Verify the artist profile

In Spotify’s current lyrics instructions, the route is to create a Musixmatch Pro account, select the free plan if it meets your needs, and add your artist profile using its Spotify link. Musixmatch reviews the request and contacts you about verification. Check the current instructions and plan details before signing up.

Once verified, link the requested Spotify account. In Musixmatch, select the artist, find the song and open its lyrics. If a release is missing, Spotify’s instructions describe an option to add it; it may take time to appear.

Add and check the lyrics

Enter the full lyric, including repeated choruses and other repeated lines. Spotify advises transcribing the lyrical audio and writing the words in their native script. Listen once more before sending: a line that changed during recording can easily be missed in an older lyric sheet.

For a line-by-line display, open the sync view and adjust each line to begin when its first word is sung. Where voices overlap, Spotify advises prioritizing the main vocal. Send the changes and allow a few days for them to appear on Spotify.

If something looks wrong

Check that you selected the right artist and version of the song. Compare the text and timing with the recording, correct the affected lines, and send the update again. Spotify notes that lyrics in Japan are handled by a separate service, so check its guidance if that audience matters to your release.

Keep a copy of the final transcript and collaborators’ approvals with your release records. For the rest of the credits and release details, use the metadata checklist.
